The ADHD Brain: Overcoming Intention Deficit Disorder

About 60% of people with ADHD have a co-existing psychiatric condition. Comorbidities rarely factor into the ADHD evaluation, leading to an incomplete diagnosis.

Navigating ADHD and Its Associated Conditions

Approximately 60% of individuals diagnosed with ADHD also contend with at least one other psychiatric disorder. It's crucial to understand the potential co-occurring conditions, so ensure your healthcare provider offers a comprehensive evaluation before leaving their office.

A thorough assessment for ADHD should include checks for more than just ADHD itself. Although a significant portion—60%—of those with ADHD exhibit additional psychiatric conditions, these comorbidities are often overlooked, leading to partial diagnoses. Whether you're diagnosed with ADHD or another condition that mimics its symptoms, understanding the full spectrum of your mental health is essential.

Checklists used in evaluations are helpful tools but should not be the sole method for diagnosis. The most informative diagnostic tool is your medical history, which involves a personal discussion with your healthcare professional about your experiences and symptoms. This narrative is vital in medical diagnostics, often more so than physical exams.

Before concluding an ADHD evaluation—or if you've already been diagnosed—discuss potential coexisting conditions with your doctor, such as:

ADHD and Frequent Coexisting Disorders

  1. Learning Differences
Between 30% and 50% of those with ADHD also experience learning disabilities. These include:
  • Dyslexia: This common learning disability can make learning to read and spell challenging. Despite my personal challenges with both ADHD and dyslexia, I've succeeded in a career centered around language.
  • Dyscalculia: Often referred to as math-related dyslexia, this involves difficulties with math facts, computations, and understanding math language.
  • Dysgraphia: This condition affects handwriting, including how one holds a pen, spaces letters and words, and overall writing posture.
  • Dyspraxia (Developmental Coordination Disorder): This disorder is characterized by clumsiness and coordination challenges, which can significantly impact self-esteem, especially in socially critical stages like adolescence.

Treatment for these learning disorders might include specialized tutoring methods like Orton-Gillingham or Lindamood-Bell for dyslexia, occupational therapy, and counseling for related emotional distress.

  1. Behavioral or Conduct Issues: These may manifest as oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), conduct disorder (CD), or antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). Early intervention is key in managing these conditions, typically with a multidisciplinary treatment approach.
  2. Anxiety Disorders: Anxiety might develop from untreated ADHD but can decrease once focus and control improve with proper medication. However, standalone anxiety disorders require their own tailored treatments including education, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and medication.
  3. Mood Disorders: What appears as depression might actually be a reaction to unmanaged ADHD, improving once appropriate ADHD treatment begins. Still, primary mood disorders like dysthymia or bipolar disorder might co-exist, necessitating specific treatments.
  4. Substance Use Disorders (SUD): ADHD is frequently accompanied by SUD or behavioral addictions. It's important to discuss these issues openly with your doctor to find effective treatments beyond self-discipline alone.

Ensure that you thoroughly discuss these conditions with your doctor during your evaluation to receive a holistic diagnosis and treatment plan.
